Phototheca made an impression for me. Appart from standart functions like photos browsing (which works really fast on my computer) or slideshow it has such features like displaying photos by calendar, or in timeline. It's really convenient and I didn't see such features in other apps. And it's free!

Works as advertised, however as of today does not support HiDPI screens.

I like this Tool, because focuses on the organization of your pictures (and videos). You can easily manage and apply new keywords. And you could create smart albums/collections based on different filters. It's not bloated with picture editing stuff, which I personally do not need.

I have been using FotoAlbum for years, so my opinion is certainly biased. I tried to do a quick comparison between FotoAlbum, Phototheca and JetPhoto. I confess I have been unable to use JetPhoto, so that I have no opinion about it apart from the point that the first steps are less than obvious to me. Phototheca and FotoAlbum are close: free and paid versions, both use a library to which you must first import your images... The advantages of Phototheca are cosmetic, but cosmetics are important for photos! I don't know why, but all FotoAlbum themes are light, and I prefer a dark background to see my photos. Apart from that, I feel that FotoAlbum has much more features than Phototheca in the free versions, especially in the tagging features, but also in the fields which can be used to create a smart album. This is not an in depth analysis, as I did not create a comprehensive list of features to compare these softwares.

What is Phototheca?

Phototheca gives you the most convenient tool-set to organize and structure your photos.

Import photos from memory cards and hard drives, tag photos with keywords, arrange into albums, view on calendar and timeline, remove duplicates and more. Have thousands of photos and want to bring them in order? It's easy - create and populate Events, Albums and Smart Albums. Tag your photos with keywords, friends and places where your photos were taken. Filter by camera model or date. Correct wrong time stamps on photos if your camera had the wrong date setup. Build your own photo library refined and transparent - structured the way you like.

No distracting panels or windows when viewing your photos in Fullscreen mode along with possibilities to adjust background colors to fit your light conditions or personal preferences. Change the size of thumbnails with a slider to view more or bigger thumbnails, adjust height of photostripe when viewing single photo. Launch instant search for photos by keywords with the Keywords panel. Travel in time across your photo-library with amazing Calendar and Timeline features.

How often do you end up having multiple copies of the same photos in different folders on your disk no longer sure where things are? Let Phototheca detect duplicates for you! Just import all your folders with photos, and if duplicates exist the Duplicates item will appear in the Library so that you can check what photos are duplicated and where the copies are located.
