What is Pencil.dev?
Pencil.dev is a vector design canvas that runs inside your IDE, letting you create and edit UI layouts next to your code instead of in a separate design tool. It works as an extension for VS Code and Cursor, and it can also be used as a standalone desktop app on macOS and Linux.
It includes an infinite canvas, layers and editing controls, reusable components and design system libraries, and variables and themes that map to design tokens and can sync with CSS. Pencil stores designs as .pen files that work with Git, and it supports code sync so designs and implementation can stay aligned. It also integrates with AI assistants via MCP, including Claude Code and Codex, to generate and refine UI from prompts inside the same workspace. Pencil is currently free, with a note that paid plans or features may be introduced later.
