What is OpenTiles?
Keep your favorite sites on your start page
Add a site you like to the page, and reorder your bookmarks by dragging. Site icons are fetched for you automatically, and Deep icon lookup finds the icon of a site that ordinary means cannot reach. Besides the icons fetched automatically, every tile can be given a file of your own, one pasted from the clipboard, or even SVG code pasted into a field meant for it. Icon colour, icon rounding and background colour can be adjusted as well.
Collect your bookmarks into groups
Use groups to sort your sites; to add a tile to a group, it is enough to drag it onto the group's name. Groups can be reordered by dragging too, and the navigation bar comes two ways: as a floating panel or as a status bar. Either can be placed wherever on the screen suits you. Groups can also be changed with a touchpad gesture or the scroll of a mouse wheel.
Animated and static backgrounds
The start page can take video for its background, not only pictures. A file can be loaded from your computer, or given as a web address. Backgrounds can be dimmed or blurred to your taste, and the ones used last are kept in a history.
Flexible appearance
A light and a dark theme are both there, along with an accent colour for the add-on. The number of columns in the tile grid, the shape of the tiles and the spacing between them are all adjustable, as are the interface fonts, thanks to Google Fonts being built in. Every part of the interface can be set up to suit you, moved somewhere else, or simply hidden, if absolute minimalism is what you are after.
Backup and restore
Export and Import save and restore all the sites you have kept and the add-on's settings, as a file of its own. The add-on also reads Speed Dial 2 backup files, which makes for a smooth migration.
