The dev is a total lazy bum:

" then he stops working on it

there's a difference between not working on something and working on something locally

here's what happened:

4 months ago, i started opencut.

i quickly spun up a repo. it was very vibe-coded.

prs came in, i accepted them all with minimal review. 90% of these prs were vibe-coded as well.

the codebase grew a lot, and i knew it wouldn't hold together for very long.

I started working on a complete codebase overhaul for a month. i was stupid enough to not version control it.

got malware, reset my pc, forgot to copy opencut to another drive (i thought i had done it), lost a month of work.

at this point, i started working on the refactor again all the way from the bottom, and since then, i've been working on it locally.

this will eventually get pushed when it's done (still needs a lot of work, though i've done a lot by now)

and the codebase will be entirely different. it's actually gonna be scalable. a codebase you'd expect for a real video editor."

Doesn't have much Features yet, but I feel like this is going to be a really cool alternative to CapCut when it has better functionality. I will definitely keep an eye on it.

What is OpenCut?

OpenCut is a free and open-source video editor designed as an alternative to CapCut. Its browser-based editor provides timeline editing, media importing, cutting and trimming tools, local project storage, and watermark-free video creation through an interface intended for everyday and short-form video editing.

The app follows a privacy-first approach, processing video, audio, project data, and supported AI features locally on the user’s device instead of uploading media to OpenCut’s servers. It does not currently require an account and can also be self-hosted or modified under the MIT license. OpenCut is being rebuilt around a plugin-first architecture and a shared Rust core, with planned support for native desktop and mobile apps, third-party plugins, scripting, an Editor API, headless batch rendering, and an MCP server for AI-based automation.
