While Finder does have a batch rename feature, I often find it not powerful enough but I'm too cheap to buy Renamer for this feature. NameChanger is free and does everything I desire. Pro-tip: NameChanger has a Service called "Rename with NameChanger". You can select multiple files in Finder, right click and find this service in the context menu.
No undo feature. Use at your own risk!
NameChanger is quite intuitive and easy to use - recommended!

Automator can also do file renaming, but doesn't seem to allow for regular expressions..
no way to do uppercase to lowercase and not enough options for other things
I'm going back to using my virtual machine in windows to get the job done with a windows app

I used to be a big fan of Name Mangler, and wasn't too displeased with File Wrangler but when I upgraded to Snow Leopard both these developers tried to force me to buy/pay again for software they continue to provide for free to people using 10.5. We shouldn't be penalized.
