I meber the days, Xanga had gotten stale, i was going into 8th grade (~2004), the internet was finally upgrading from dial-up to DSL, and Myspace exploded like wildfire.

While social websites existed before Myspace, the term "social media" was first coined during the Myspace days. Before that, they were called message boards or forums/bb.

You use to have a dead simple UI/UX, ability to pimp out your profile with custom css themes. And you could express yourself even more by going to your fav musicians myspace profile, and selecting one of their free streaming songs to be featured on your personal profile. The "top 8" was a big source of drama in my high school days. We were all soo fuckin self-concious that we took it personal when a friend would exclude us from being on their "top 8", being on it meaning it would show on their profiles front page, that we were myspace friends.

Times have changed, but generally for the better. Im now two years clean from all social media, you should try it. You will not miss it, i promise
