It is quite sad to see that no real alternative to Last.fm has appeared since its gradual decline started around 2008 or so. It was THE ultimate social network for music geeks, and nothing has really replaced that aspect.

I'm happy that Spotify still supports scrobbling though so I can keep maintaining my Last.fm music profile. 14 years and counting.

I don't really care about the stats, or the followers thing. To me the recommendation system is the single most interesting feature of this site, and it works reasonably well. Sadly, there's nothing you can do to manually tune these recommendations. You cannot exclude artists, or hide tracks you've already listened to.

Also, and this is a bit inexcusable given how old the site is, artists are still not handled properly. Tracks tagged with multiple artists will often not be recognized. MusicBrainz tagging conventions, like putting featured artists in the artist tag and not the track title, are not supported either. And worst of all, Last.fm apparently still can't make a difference between homonyms.

I have had my account since May 2010 and I still use it today. You listen to one good artist and thanks to the algorithm you get to know more and more and more... Something beautiful!

The only problem with last.fm I see is that they still refuse to support for multiple artists.

The same track can be tagged as: Noisia and Phace; Noisia & Phace; Noisia / Phace; Noisia, Phace; Noisia x Phace; etc. Also it can be tagged as «Phace & Noisia» (artists listed in reverse order). And it's just for 2 artists for a single track. Sometimes there are many (I've seed something like 10) artists performing a track.

It messes up my statistics, even though me and any other user listed to same tracks, his are tagged slightly differently and last.fm will tell that our music tasted are different because artists are «different». It's time for some kind of standard to appear and for last.fm to support it.

foobar2000 is the only music player I know that handles multiple artists properly. I used to tag my music manually to match what it's tagged on last.fm to count my scrobbles properly, but now it's 2020 and last.fm still refuses to do something, so I just don't care anymore. I tag my music as I need (so I can find tracks easily by artists / album artists) and if last.fm can't understand that «Holly, Skope» is both Holly AND Scope — it's not my problem, really.

So that's it, stats and recommendations are messed up because last.fm can't adapt to new music standards.

Not only that, but homonyms are still not handled correctly.
