Most of the alternate minecraft server projects are shutting down. The most successful modified minecraft server was Bukkit, and they're done. Mojang is sending cease and desist orders and having all the project teams dump their download links and halt all development using minecraft software. It's a shame.. as most of these projects solved serious problems with Minecraft's solution model and made keeping a minecraft server far easier that was possible with the generic server. ;-(
