Comment summary: Microsoft Edge has improved significantly with its switch to the Chromium engine, offering better speed, resource usage, and compatibility with Chrome extensions. Users highlight its features like vertical tabs, tab previews, and text-to-speech. However, privacy concerns and data tracking remain significant drawbacks. Some users appreciate its integration with Microsoft services, but others criticize it as intrusive. Overall, while Edge offers distinct features, it battles mixed reviews on privacy and customization.

Actually REALLY good since they changed to the Chromium engine. It's very fast, supports all the same extensions that chrome dose. Also the Android version is excellent. It syncs with the desktop app, has ad block built in (it's off by default though, just go into settings and toggle it on), integrates with Windows 10 nicely. You can easily tap a button and have the same site come up on your PC etc. Been my default browser since they switched to Chromium.

The amount of ads, tracking, and other unwanted junk that is enabled in Microsoft Edge by default is absolutely intolerable. I don't want my browser to fill the new tab page with tabloid news, show me coupons while spying on my shopping habits, or cram other Microsoft products into the browser interface. The huge non-removable "B" button for Bing services in the browser bar is an eyesore. Firefox doesn't do this crap, and even Chromium is better than what Microsoft Edge is doing now.

Pros:

  • the 2nd (after Arc) most user-friendly internet browser (I tried out Firefox, Zen, Brave, Vivaldi, Safari, Arc & Edge),
  • best syncing cross all devices,
  • best implemented tab splitting.

Contras:

  • the start option “open all tabs of the last session” is unusable with multiple YouTube tabs because Edge makes all tabs active on startup and loads all these tabs fills RAM and causes crashes, this is pretty embarrassing from a developer giant like Microsoft,
  • performance control has no effect at all on RAM,
  • missing the option to copy links of a whole tab group or selected tabs, bookmarks or bookmark folders,
  • restoring of the minimized Edge window also restores one of minimized PWAs.

Cluttered and busy, Edge really, really wants you to sign into a Microsoft account. Once you turn off as many Microsoft specials as possible, it feels usable again -- but then, it's just another Chromium skin.

Can't recommend Edge for a simple reason no browser shall do by their own without their user consent: Reverting the user-defined Search-Engine. Every time I set it to StartPage, every now and then Edge sends me a notification they reverted it "because seems I didn't do it on my own" so there's that.

If you use all the Microsoft ecosystem, within Bing Search-Engine, maybe this browser is just your go-to, I mean is already preinstalled on your Windows.

Does a fairly good job of text-to-speech from pdfs. However, I am obliged to say that it's frustrating that if often pauses, or halts, during readings, and there is no obvious way of restarting it at the same point. Additionally, when it is reading English texts with embedded French words and phrases the pronunciations are truly execrable

Pros:

  • Vertical tabs enhance navigation and workspace organization.
  • Tab previews for efficient multitasking and easier tab management.
  • Converts websites into standalone apps, streamlining access and workflow.
  • Built on the reliable and fast Chromium platform, offering extensive customization through settings and "://flags." Access to a vast array of extensions from both the Chrome Web Store and the Edge Store enhances functionality.
  • The Read Aloud feature, powered by AI, offers exceptionally natural voice synthesis, enriching content engagement.

Cons:

  • Missing the option to automatically open bookmarks and typed URLs in a new tab, a convenience taken for granted in Firefox.
  • Lacks a dedicated search field with support for custom search engines, limiting search flexibility compared to Firefox.
