Metatake

Metatake is a free, non-commercial, ad-free site that connects films by meaning instead of genre or star ratings. Each film is broken into "figures" — an object, a gesture, a shot — and every figure is read through one of 14 critical frameworks (psychoanalysis, semiotics, political theory, and more). When a reading recurs across films it becomes a hub page that links them, so you can travel from one film to another you'd never shelve nearby. Nearly 2,000 films are close-read into 70,000+ interpretive readings (with nearly 7,000 films in the index overall), alongside browsable databases of film-theory concepts and hundreds of theorists, and an interactive connection graph. The readings are AI-generated by a purpose-built pipeline and transparently labeled as such on every page. No signup is needed to browse; logged-in users can add their own takes, and there are no ratings or downvotes anywhere.
