What is Manolit Aire?

Manolit∞ Aire is a free, open-source web app that helps you walk through cities in the shade (or in the sun, when you want it), with live air quality data on the same map. It runs in any browser, needs no registration and shows no ads.

What it does:

  • Shade routing: enter an origin and a destination and get a walking route that favors shaded streets, with the percentage of the route in shade. A reverse mode routes you through the sun instead, useful in winter.
  • Real-time 3D shadows: buildings and trees are drawn from OpenStreetMap data and their shadows are computed from the sun's position at the selected time.
  • Air quality: live PM2.5, PM10, NO2, O3, SO2, CO, UV index and AQI from official stations across Spain, plus a 48-hour forecast from Copernicus CAMS (served through Open-Meteo).
  • Solar irradiance history: hourly data from NASA POWER.
  • Cloud layer and sun position overlays.
  • Plain-language explanations in several modes (citizen, scientist, large-print, kids), an accessible mode, and interface languages: Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician, English and Georgian.

Privacy and footprint: no trackers, no third-party cookies, no account. Settings stay in your own browser. The site is very light (about 0.38 MB per visit) and hosted on renewable energy.

Coverage: air quality and shadows cover all of Spain. Shadows depend on how well buildings and trees are mapped in OpenStreetMap, so the app includes a short guide to add missing ones; the map refreshes weekly. Outside Spain, air quality works in many places, but shadow accuracy varies.

Manolit∞ Aire is made by one person in Seville, has no company behind it and is supported by voluntary donations on Ko-fi. Source code is available on GitHub.
