Having worked with NexusFont, Fontbase, and pro software like Suitcase Fusion, FontExplorer X Pro, I can say that MainType is an excellent pro-grade font management.
After using Suitcase for many many years, in 2004 I got frustrated with it's lack of power and went looking for alternatives. That's when I discovered High-Logic's MainType, and I have been a loyal user of High-Logic's MainType (and Font Creator) ever since. MainType has an incredible amount of functionality and customization available. It gives you options for how you want the interface modules displayed and it handles LARGE numbers of typefaces and font families with ease. I am able to keep all my typefaces impeccably organized and am able to create new sets for current jobs and install and uninstall them in an instant. MainType has many features and is a main staple of my design business. It's partly thanks to High-Logic's MainType that I am able to work so quickly. It really allows me to change and install font sets in the blink of an eye without any interruption to, or hesitation from, Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop. If you're not already using MainType, you're missing out. It is absolutely essential. I don't know what I would do without it.

Even if it might not be perfect all the way, I wholeheartedly agree with all the positive reviews. Ther is no better alternative anywhere. I spent hours preparing for the end of PS1 Support in some months and I would have spent days without MainType. Havin been a satisfied pro user for many years today I decided to give that review after once again being "rescued" by the program that just works so perfectly that you can forget about it for month at a time sometimes. I also decided to give more feedback to the developers because once again I experienced super-fast and friendly support. MainType has fixed the problems Adobe and Microsoft cause for me countless times.
MainType is what EVERY FONT MANAGER should be. Simple, strong, logically structured, plenty of resources, NEVER bringing issues to Windows System or third-party applications. I don't want a font manager that automatically installs a lot of issues, just to keep a dubious professional appearance. I want a font manager that effectively WORKS in every circumstance or context, even when my system is stressed by multiple tasks. And more: I want a font manager that simply and strongly deals with thousands of fonts without a single gasp. And I found that manager, and I am proud to be a costumer, a hard MainType user. MainType 10 was just released with support for the display of OpenType features, and adding Notes to fonts. The Information Panel now shows more font metrics such as font units per em, Caps Height, x-height, Italic angle, etc.
Three new themes have been added: Blue, Green, and a Dark them to reduce battery use on laptops or tablets.
The menus now fully supports access keys, improving the workflow for keyboard users.
MainType is still free for non-commercial use, but will support only 2,500 fonts in the library. There is no time limit to the free version. Use it as long as it takes before you decide on upgrading to the Pro version.
MainType is a robust font manager that allows one to view, group, install/uninstall (even temporarily!) fonts on the fly, has a registry checker, and a fully customizable interface. My main use for such a program is to be able to search through my library of some 90K fonts (full font samples are viewable of EACH, in lightning speed) and temporarily install fonts to play with while deciding on a final design. This program makes all that as easy as a right-click. Granted, with a font library of this size, the program's initial setup can take a while as it catalogs all the fonts in the directories you've told it to use (and not many people will have as many as I do!) - but once the catalog is built, the program runs swiftly and smoothly. I know people who are far more organized than I who will love this program's ability to tag fonts and group them into user-defined categories also. It's WELL worth the money.
