Fantastic alternative to PS and LR. For amateurs and professionals alike. Seriously, give it a try
It might be a good editor but trying to export images is a pain. From a workflow perspective getting images out to clients needs to be a full feature, not a neglected afterthought.
Paid + Not open-source
So many tools but with some semblance of simplicity if you're not needing all the power this app provides. Unfortunately, the UI has been degraded since earlier versions in favor of overly large icons and buttons. As well, it still is painfully slow during export operations. Now, with the subscription model, it's evident Skylum isn't listening to its customers.
Edit: The presets presentation is evidently geared to the developer, not the user. There's no logic to how the presets are shown to the user; it renders them almost useless. I'll keep Neo around because it can do some amazing things but Skylum should provide the old presets interface from v4 (and maybe earlier).
Learned today that Skylum is moving to a subscription-only model. If you have a perpetual license for Neo v1.x (the current version as I write this), you are not forced into a subscription. The latest update allegedly provides bug fixes but, thankfully, doesn't remove any functionality. So I can keep using Neo for sky replacements (for which it excels) and do the rest of my editing elsewhere in any other app that provides rationally organized and presented presets (ie, Exposure x7). I understand why Skylum has moved to this model but the user interface obfuscates 70% of its functionality so I'm not subscribing. Sorry.
Upgraded to v1.2.x as the AI features really do help. Wish it would permit itself to be used as a plugin from apps other than Lightroom. There are decent cataloging apps from which photos may be sent to Luminar for editing but not in the "Lightroom plugin" method. Do note that Luminar really likes a -fast- computer.
It is nice as you can use AI and get quite good result. However the app is using too much marketing. For instance they promote a new revolution software called Luminar AI which in reality is a couple of new models added. So it s rather an update of luminar 4 than a big improvement. Same story is true from luinar3 to luminar4. Another big issue is speed. Even with a recent machine it takes ages to save a picture and they do not use the gpu at all unless lightroom...
Looks like a well made product, with some powerful features that are easy to use, but all of these features they're promoting are for drastically changing your images (IMO). I do plenty of compositing and extreme changes to my own and others' photos, but this program seems to promote modifying the base image in your typical workflow, vs slightly adjusting the curves/white balance. Nothing wrong with it, but it just grinds my gears for some reason if people are putting a lot of time into the photography itself to then use something like this and replace the entire sky, turn an overcast day into a sunset, and then pass it off as the original shot. I know how "get off my lawn" I sound, but can't help it. Very cool program though, haha!
The editing capabilities are quite good. It has some filters and effects that would require significant work in other applications.
But they over-marketed and over-sold their digital asset mgmt (think catalog) in 2017. They failed to deliver it until a year later and even then it is not a true DAM. Users are very angry with Skylum, and many including me have gone to another product for DAM. I still use it as a plug in.
