LUKS is described as 'is the standard for Linux hard disk encryption. By providing a standard on-disk-format, it does not only facilitate compatibility among distributions, but also provides secure management of multiple user passwords' and is a Disk Encryption tool in the security & privacy category. There are more than 25 alternatives to LUKS for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and BSD. The best alternative is VeraCrypt, which is both free and Open Source. Other great apps like LUKS are TrueCrypt, Windows BitLocker, AES Crypt and CryFS.
