Consider a natural disaster (earthquake for instance). You can still access your notes even though all the cell towers are out.

      JohnFastman TagSpaces reads/saves files locally. You can sync those however you wish. It supports note taking (plain text and html), tagging (labels), text search, and works with many file formats. The basic version (which is v. good) is open source & free; advanced features cost a little. Not perfect, but excellent.
