KeeFox is a plugin for Firefox. It talks to KeePass, the password manager. Used together, they make an excellent open-source LastPass replacement, especially on Windows and Linux.

How it works: If you use KeePass to manage your passwords (which I recommend), and Firefox as your browser (which I recommend), you can install KeeFox, which is a Firefox plugin. Then all your passwords and logins will be available to you from the browser, including auto-filling forms as you login to your online accounts. The functionality/convenience is then similar to that of LastPass, Dashlane or 1Password, with the only difference being that your KeePass library is stored locally. (Although you can sync that with your favourite service, as you like.)

The good:

  • Keefox gives KeePass browser integration
  • It's free
  • It's open source, so you can inspect the code

The bad:

  • Firefox only (although for online privacy, Firefox is best)
  • Doesn't work well with Mac (though you can achieve this via Mono. However, for Mac, check out MacPass)
  • Very minor point: different Linux distros might need you to put the plugin file in slightly different folders, but usually not.

Overall: I highly recommend KeeFox. I used to use LastPass and now I used KeePass because I don't want my passwords in the cloud and the target of hackers, because of the threat of three-letter agencies, national security letters and because LastPass doesn't encrypt URLs. Keefox gives me back the convenience of LastPass without having to trust others with my passwords.
