It has been a very valuable Inkscape replacement to me. Inkscape is too heavy for my computer. Ipe does not have all that features but I have managed to migrate a lot of my work there, and is very fast. For me, a life saver!
Simple and comprehensive editor of LaTeX figures including formulas
Writing with LaTeX is perfect once you master the new paradigm, throw WYSIWYG in the trash can, and as a bonus gets a beautifully typeset document. But its facilities ends when it comes to drawing. I'm not a newbie in programming, and i'm very patient to write down in code the results I expect for my documents, but I couldn't adapt to coding drawings. Ipe gives you an alternative that will support the fonts and any complex math you use in your documents inside your illustrations, and yet quick and precise enough so your drawings will look professional and sober to fit scientific documents. As an Electronic Engineer, I've been using it successfully for around 5 years for drawing circuits, schemes, didactic drafts, and plots (which I finish from simple PGFplot imported with pdf to IPE), and with the math and symbols needed all included and consistent with the typography used in the text of the document.
