RustFig is xfig rebuilt from scratch in Rust: the classic vector drawing program for figures in scientific papers, lecture notes and LaTeX documents, now running natively on Windows, macOS and Linux, with no X server, XQuartz, Cygwin or WSL, and in the web browser.
It works like xfig: the same drawing and editing modes, the same three-button mouse functions, panels and keyboard shortcuts, and the same .fig file format. RustFig opens every Fig version (1.3 to 3.2) and saves Fig 3.2 files that xfig and fig2dev read unchanged, so old figure collections keep working.
fig2dev is built in, ported to Rust. Every export language is available without installing anything else: PDF, EPS, PostScript, SVG, PNG and other bitmaps, pstex/pdftex overlays, TikZ, PSTricks, pict2e, LaTeX picture and more. Special (LaTeX) text is typeset by your TeX installation and shown on the canvas as it will print, formulas included.
Modern additions where xfig's way no longer fits:
- multi-level undo;
- printing through the system's print dialog;
- command search and F1 help;
- function and data plots with LaTeX labels;
- figure libraries for Feynman diagrams, quantum circuits, optics and electric circuits;
- automation through a JSON control channel and an MCP server.
