Comment summary: Greenshot is highly regarded by users for being lightweight, open-source, and providing robust screenshot capabilities. While praised for its ease of use, diverse settings, and low memory usage, some users note missing features like video capture and full window scrolling. There are complaints about certain features not being available for MacOS, with users emphasizing its Windows compatibility. Despite a few criticisms, Greenshot is generally seen as a reliable and functional screenshot tool.

ShareX icon ShareX

see this app

it runs greenshot for image editing but has slew of numerous features layered on top of it, including gif support, uploading host support, scroll captures, OCR recognition, etc

shareX is like greenshot 2.0

POST UPDATE 1/1/18

Greenshot standalone is starting to incorporate a lot of shareX features, I use both a standalone greenshot and sharex+portable-green-shot editor right now, depending on what I'm doing. I customize shareX extensively, greenshot I use all default values out of the box since the defaults are great

ShareX vs Greenshot comparison

Greenshot Pros

  • Dynamically saving location is miles ahead better than shareX
  • Better editor obviously, since shareX image editor based on greenshot

Greenshot Cons

  • Cannot set an automatic save file if using dynamic save location
  • Doesn't support image hosting logins
  • Doesn't support gifs

Back then, when I tried to use this application, I received error messages like "Sorry, an unexpected error occured. The good news is: you can help us getting rid of it by filing a bug report. Please visit the URL below, create a new bug report and paste the contents from the text area into the description. Please add a meaningful summary and enclose any information you consider to be helpful for reproducing the issue. Also, we would highly appreciate if you checked whether a tracker item already exists for this bug. (You can use the search to find those quickly.) Thank you:)".

Great alternative to Windows Clipping Tool and Windows 10 screenshot tool. Best feature is the ability to quickly edit screenshots for blurring parts or drawing arrows.

Greenshot is very lightweight, perfect for taking the screenshots needed, though I was pretty concerned about it not being updated since 2017. There are even users on the GitHub repo that are hoping for a new version of Greenshot to be released. I was also a tad bit concerned about Greenshot being privacy-friendly. A couple or so trackers on the website, and the "Privacy friendly" and/or "No tracking" features aren't listed here on AlternativeTo.

All this makes up for why I switched to ShareX icon ShareX While a bit bigger in terms of filesize for the installation, it has more features, including the ability to making screen recordings and GIFs.

I really hope Greenshot's not another dead project at this point :(

I find it better than ShareX since it's lightweight and does not consume as much RAM as a background process. Also very easy to use.

Works flawless since years. I would love to see an update (last in 2017), but if it works, it works.

Simple. Very much like how I can configure the keyboard shortcuts and set the output destination. Donationware (at least on Windows). Other software may provide more but all I needed was what Greenshot provides.

What is Greenshot?

Greenshot is a light-weight screenshot tool optimized for productivity with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) support. Save a screenshot or a part of the screen to a file within a second or load it up to an Internet-picture-storage and get a public accessible URL (Confluence, Box.com, Dropbox, Flick, Imgur without/with password, JIRA, Picasa-Web). Export to Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook) or an "external command" (self defined). Apply text and shapes to the screenshot. Offers capture of window, region or full screenshot. Supports several image formats. Low demand of space on harddisk: 1289 kB; 32 supported languages.

Greenshot for Windows is free and open source, while it costs $1.99 on Mac App Store to cover the platform costs.
