What is Fernanda?

Fernanda is a desktop writing app for long-form prose. Like Obsidian, a vault is just a folder on your computer, but Fernanda is built for writing projects rather than note-taking: everything you write stays in plain-text files you own and can open in any editor.

  • No Save command: files exist on disk from the moment they're created, and changes are written as you type
  • Files come back exactly as they went in: line endings, byte order marks, and special characters are preserved
  • .txt is a first-class file type, alongside Markdown and Fountain (opened as plain text, without rendering for now)
  • An optional Common Vault shared by every project, for notes, templates, and research you want in reach whatever you're working on
  • Tabs, split panes, and pop-out windows, with the same file open in several places in sync
  • Spellcheck with Hunspell dictionaries, find and replace, a word counter, and bundled fonts for prose
  • Picks up changes made by other programs, Git, or sync clients
  • PDFs and images open read-only beside your text

Native app built with Qt (not Electron). Free and open source under the GPL. English and Spanish.

Fernanda is in open beta and under active development.
