FamilySearch is a genealogy organization operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. FamilySearch maintains a collection of records, resources, and services designed to help people learn more about their family history. FamilySearch gathers, preserves, and shares genealogical records worldwide. It offers free access to its resources and service online at FamilySearch.org, one of the most heavily used genealogy sites on the Internet. In addition, FamilySearch offers personal assistance at more than 5,100 family history centers in 140 countries.
Use of the historical record search and contributing to the Family Tree require a free registered account. The Family Tree section allows users to collaborate on a single, shared, worldwide family tree. It contains over a billion names.
The FamilySearch.org website offers access to digital images of genealogical records. These images can be searched along with a number of databases. It also contains the catalog of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. The library holds genealogical records for over 110 countries, territories, and possessions, including over 2.4 million rolls of microfilmed genealogical records; 742,000 microfiche; 310,000 books, serials, and other formats; and 4,500 periodicals. FamilySearch also offers research help through the Family History Research Wiki, Forums, digitized books, and online free family history courses through the Learning Centre.
FamilySearch.org has two apps the FamilySearch Family Tree app and the FamilySearch Memories app. Currently both of these apps provide support for iOS and Android and are available in 10 different languages. Both of these apps are available to download for free. These allow the user to look up their own family history and archive stories and photos onto their servers.

Said about FamilySearch.org as an alternative
Yes it is, very great but beware of this some times their support is odd so you can flip a coin and hope you get great support, their is some times I have had poor support.
It is free - has lots of online records to help create family trees - and it uses online volunteers to enter data on existing images that need to be put in the database.
Lots of records, from the whole globe

Billions of names, free apps on Android, Apple, Chrome OS, Kindle, and free online courses on the FamilySearch.org website. I started my research using other apps, but when I found the site I was able to find family back over eight generations so far.
