Espresso is a file search app for macOS that indexes the names and paths of every file on your disks and filters results instantly as you type. It’s built on the same idea as voidtools Everything on Windows, and it uses the same search syntax: AND, OR and NOT, wildcards, regular expressions, and filters for size, date, file type, folder and duplicates. You can save searches and build macros.
The first index runs once, and on a typical startup disk it finishes in under 30 seconds. After that, Espresso follows file system changes as they happen.
When you eject a disk, it moves to “Offline Disks.” You can still search and browse its files, and Espresso catches up on changes when you plug it back in.
Supported file systems are APFS, HFS+, exFAT, FAT32 and NTFS (read-only), plus network shares if you turn them on.
A global hotkey (⌥ Space) opens a quick search window from any app. The index stays on your Mac, and there are no analytics or telemetry.
Espresso is free for personal use. A one-time Pro license (€19, no subscription, up to 3 Macs) is required for work use and adds:
- natural-language search that runs locally on your Mac
- unlimited offline disks
- search inside documents and photos
- media metadata columns
- bulk rename
- CSV export
- a timeline of file changes
- integrations: command line, Shortcuts, Raycast, Alfred and an MCP server
Requires macOS 14 or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. The download is just 7MB (Apple silicon required for neural engine features)
