What is Caxton?

Caxton is a native macOS text editor designed for files that are too large for conventional editors. Instead of loading a file into memory, Caxton builds an index, which keeps the app responsive regardless of file size.

On an M1 Max, a 10 GB file with 80 million rows opens in about 5 seconds, regex search across the entire file completes in about 2 seconds, Replace All runs in under a second, and a 1 GB CSV sorts in 6 to 8 seconds.

Typical uses include inspecting server logs, editing large CSV exports and data files, and working with files that cause other editors to disable features or consume large amounts of RAM.

Caxton includes regex find and replace across the whole file, line filtering by pattern, and sorting for large delimited files.

Caxton is a paid app with a 14-day free trial that does not require a credit card. Monthly, annual, and lifetime licenses are available. When a trial or license ends, the app switches to read-only mode; files are never locked. Distributed as a direct download from caxton.app.
