Alternatives to LibreCAD for all platforms with Open Source License

  • FreeCAD

FreeCAD is a general purpose parametric 3D CAD modeler. The development is completely Open Source (LGPL License). FreeCAD is aimed directly at mechanical engineering and product design but also fits in a wider range of uses around engineering, such as architecture or other engineering specialties. FreeCAD features tools similar to Catia, SolidWorks or Solid Edge, and therefore also falls into the category of MCAD, PLM, CAx and CAE.

  • Open CASCADE

Open CASCADE Technology is a software development platform freely available in open source. It includes components for 3D surface and solid modeling, visualization, data exchange and rapid application development. Open CASCADE Technology can be best applied in development of numerical simulation software including CAD/CAM/CAE, AEC and GIS, as well as PDM applications. • Linkage Mechanism Designer and Simulator

Linkage is computer aided design software used for quick prototyping of linkage mechanisms. The number of operations needed to add a link and get it connected to other links in the mechanism has been minimized to the lowest number possible, making this program ideal for “throwing together” a working machine. The mechanism is edited and animated in the same window allowing for quick analysis and modification while working on a design. It is simplistic for a CAD program but that is the intent.

  • SAMoCAD

SAMoCAD designed to create simple drawings, primarily to architectural drawings. Development of the program is far from complete, but it is already possible to draw. There is partial DXF format support, at the moment almost all drafted in the program can be saved in DXF and can be opened in AutoCAD (or another CAD). Also can be imported from other programs simple drawings in SAMoCAD. The program can also save drawings in SVG format, which can be viewed in web browsers.

  • Archimedes

Archimedes is a free and open source CAD (Computer Aided Design) software. It is a robust system built over Eclipse’s Rich Client Java Platform fully based on plug ins. This means it is easily extensible but also has a pretty thin core that allows you to select the features you need and drop the other ones easily.

    • Discontinued
The project seems no longer developed. Last version, 0.66, released in June 2012, can be still downloaded from SourceForge.
