Bytopsy is a free, open-source (MIT) disk space analyzer and cleaner for Windows. It scans drives and folders quickly to show what uses the space (folder browser, treemap, largest files, duplicates, file types), and helps clean it up safely: caches and temporary files, developer build leftovers, unused AI models, WSL and Docker virtual disks, leftovers of uninstalled apps, and games. It also covers startup programs, app updates (through winget), driver updates (through Windows Update), and disk health with low disk space alerts.
Safety is a core design goal. Protected locations such as source code repositories and password databases are never deleted, every deletion is recorded in a journal, and system-changing actions ask first. There is no telemetry; Bytopsy only goes online when the user asks it to (for example, the optional update check, which is off by default).
It's written in native C++20 with Direct2D and has no runtime dependencies. It ships as two self-contained executables: bytopsy.exe (windowed app) and bytopsy-cli.exe (terminal app for consoles, SSH and scripting). Releases are built and tested by the project's public GitHub Actions workflow.
Files to sign: bytopsy.exe and bytopsy-cli.exe from the GitHub release builds.
