Okay, BitComet was and is my choice for years.
I know why it has such a bad reputation. First of all, I didn't see any adware suggestion while installing it in 2021, maybe it's for chinese users only.
It has amazing features with expert mode enabled, for example options to reduce working set and optimize system heap. I can see all the torrents located in DHT network, all the DHT peers.
It has a backup function, even with settings!
Only it has LT-Seeding feature, for example you're downloading file with no seeds, BitComet will look for this file in other BC peers even if info_hash of your torrent is different, that's amazing, many times I recovered dead torrent/file swarms!
It has Edonkey intergration, so you can download/share to both networks!
It's fast, it's customizable, it has history of torrents, it has a mobile downloader app which can be integrated with web UI, you can disable ads.
Now, let's look why it has a bad reputation:
ISSUE #1: BitComet abuses or ignores the DHT flag on private torrents.
CONCLUSION: TRUE ONLY FOR VERSION 0.60 (it was a bug which was fixed in two weeks)
ISSUE #2: BitComet shares your private key for trackers.
CONCLUSION: You can easily disable/toggle it in settings, option name is "Torrent exchange", recommend to toggle all marks in "Service" tab.
ISSUE #3: BitComet adds trash padding files to torrent contents
CONCLUSION: When creating torrents, you can disable this by toggling "Align file piece to boundary". When bittorrent downloading occurs, it doesn't download a group of files, it downloads a group of pieces, some pieces can contain data belonging to two or more files. The use of padding files simplifies this so that bittorrent protocol becomes more compatible with http/ftp and emule downloading, so you can more efficiently download the pieces from sources outside the bittorrent swarm, so it fixes 99% issue.
ISSUE #4: BitComet abuses Super-Seeding clients by failing to inform the sending peer that it successfully downloaded a piece.
CONCLUSION: FALSE (WAS NEVER TRUE)
ISSUE #5: BitComet announces too frequently, “hammers” the tracker, and ignores the Tracker’s “reannounce” interval.
CONCLUSION: FALSE IN TESTED VERSIONS 0.90 and 0.91
ISSUE #6: BitComet has an abusive multi-tracker implementation (announces to all trackers in all tier always)
CONCLUSION: FALSE IN TESTED VERSIONS 0.90 and 0.91
ISSUE #7: BitComet deliberately misreports upload and download amounts to trackers and seeds in order to get the more upload bandwidth from seeders.
CONCLUSION: FALSE ACCUSATION
ISSUE #8: BitComet seems to favor uploading to other BitComet clients, even when getting faster download speeds from other clients.
CONCLUSION: FALSE IN TESTED VERSIONS 0.90 and 0.91
Would be nice to have a black theme, but even uTorrent lacks of it.
If you are in China, you cannot download the same version of international, they don't let you to download.
Why this Bitcomet cannot use for Smart phone? Please let me known very soon ! Thank you
It's one of the uglier looking torrents, everything works, but it's UI is very reminiscent of the WinXP design or earlier
