What is Astah UML?

Astah UML is a lightweight UML modeling tool for creating UML 2.x diagrams and mind maps. Since version 11, it includes built-in AI features: AI Chat Copilot for creating and refining diagrams with AI, AI-Powered Code Reverse for generating diagrams(including sequence diagrams) from source code, and a local MCP server that lets external AI agents such as Claude Desktop and Claude Code read and edit Astah models. The AI features use your own AI service API key.

The software includes auto-creation of class diagrams, customizable shortcut keys, and merging project files. It supports code generation from diagrams and reverse engineering of Java, C# and C++. It also offers a library of plug-ins and integrates with tools such as PlantUML and miro, and the Astah API enables diagram and model creation and modification. Diagrams can be exported to various formats or copied into Microsoft Office documents.

Free licenses are available to students at accredited colleges and universities. Astah UML replaces Astah Community, which was discontinued in 2018.
