ARES Commander is described as 'All the productive tools and smart features for 2D drafting and design that you expect at a reasonable price. With DWG 2010 as its primary drawing file format and DXF support' and is a CAD software in the photos & graphics category. There are more than 50 alternatives to ARES Commander for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, Web-based and BSD apps. The best ARES Commander alternative is LibreCAD, which is both free and Open Source. Other great apps like ARES Commander are Autodesk AutoCAD, BRL-CAD, BricsCAD and DraftSight.
It's simple and even the pro version is very cheap. So if you just need to do simple accurate line work, I would recommend it.
It doesn't currently do XRefs and DWG files from other programs (paid version only) don't display perfectly. That said it's still a useful tool to have for measuring off people's files and basic drawing.
