What is Anytype?
Described as "The Everything App" on their homepage, Anytype is offline and local first. Anytype boasts full cross-device compatibility, supports Markdown, P2P syncing, encrypted cloud storage, and allows you to organize your notes and files using powerful and dynamic collections of different types of objects.
While Anytype is source-available, their license is proprietary, and does not allow commercial use of their code, which is a potential consideration for anyone thinking of contributing. Their license does, however, allow modification and redistribution for educational, personal, and other non-commercial uses.

Comments and Reviews
I love that my data is on my devices, and I can sync between them even without an internet connection
"No Tracking" ? unsure, Exodus shows it has 1 Tracker called "Amplitude"
Currently, it is in the beta stage still and thus mandatory analytics. There is a plan to make telemetry optional in the future, but the use of analytics is for the developers to monitor the app's usage as they are still developing it.
Correct. Exodus report: https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/io.anytype.app/latest/
@james "it is in beta, and thus, mandatory analytics"
🙄 Geez dude, what are you, like, America the screen name? "Yea well, that country over there is not very democratic, and thus, mandatory military bases have been set up there. Id explain more, but you probably just don't understand military mandates". Like 😑 I believe the guy was pointing out the inconsistency with your companies own claim of not tracking and identifying as privacy friendly. I dont think theres a law requiring analytics in beta stage development. And did you also say yall are "thinking about" making telemetry optional? As in, its gonna be on by default? So when you say "local first" you literally are saying "local first, data brokers aftwrwords". Thats lame bro.
Fast, easy to use and privacy-focussed with a local-first approach
I’ve been using AnyType self-hosted on my own node for notes, knowledge bases, and daily organization.
The best part? Every device keeps a full local copy of my data—no cloud dependency, no third-party access. Even though there’s a built-in Graylog tracker for analytics, it’s trivial to block with a DNS service. The app is still evolving, but the core experience—private, encrypted, and fully under my control—is exactly what I wanted. Perfect for anyone tired of Big Tech’s data-hungry alternatives. Highly recommend for self-hosters and privacy-focused users!
Does this application have closed source code? This app has a github repository and statements from the developers about the open source code of the app, why does it say that the code is closed?
Anytype is source-available, but not open source. You can access the source code, but it's not released under an open source license.
There is some learning curve, but once I got used to it I said goodbye to Notion and never looked back. I use Anytype mainly as an all-round database/tracker and event calendar and couldn't be happier.
I'd love to see charts at some point, but I'm pleased with what they've included so far being still in development.
I thought it was open source. Why is it marked as proprietary ?
Because it's released under the “Any Source Available License 1.0” license, which is not an open source license.
Okay, I didn't know that. I'll take a look. Thanks
The main distinction, as I understood it, was that they don't want other companies to profit from their system but they're fine with people otherwise having the code. Licences that are officially open source generally enable other companies to use the code for their own profit.
