Vivaldi 8.2 lands on mobile, bringing extensions to Android and an address bar calculator

Norwegian browser maker Vivaldi has released version 8.2 of its mobile browser for Android and iOS, one week after rolling out the same version to desktop users. The headline feature is exclusive to Android: full extension support, arguably the platform's most requested feature in the six years since the browser first launched. Users can now tap a new puzzle-piece icon in the address bar to reach the Chrome Web Store and install their favorite desktop add-ons. Extensions run automatically on all websites, with per-site exceptions configurable, and individual extensions can be pinned to the address bar and reordered. While synced extension data will carry over from desktop to Android phones and tablets, the extensions themselves must be downloaded separately on each device, and not all desktop extensions are compatible with mobile at the moment.

Both platforms receive the address bar calculator introduced with the desktop release earlier this month. Typing a calculation directly into the address field instantly displays the result, which can be copied to the clipboard with a single tap, no app-switching or new tabs required. Privacy-conscious users get their usual reassurance from Vivaldi: the company says calculations are processed locally and never saved, not even in browsing history. The feature can also be disabled in the settings.

The mobile rollout completes Vivaldi's 8.2 cycle, which began on September 3 with the desktop release. That update also simplified the installation of progressive web apps (PWAs) by surfacing a visible “Install” icon in the address field for eligible sites, replacing an option previously buried in a context menu. The company, founded by former Opera CEO Jón von Tetzchner, has also teased an enterprise edition of its browser aimed at businesses, public institutions, government departments, and schools, positioning itself as an alternative to Big Tech's dominance of the corporate browsing space.
