Anthropic merges Claude chat and Cowork into a unified workspace

Anthropic has announced that its Claude chat and Claude Cowork platforms are being consolidated into a single integrated experience. The rebranding aims to eliminate the friction users faced when deciding which environment to assign different tasks to. According to the company's official blog post, “People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged”, a problem now addressed by allowing Claude to automatically determine the appropriate approach for each request.

The unified platform brings together capabilities from both Cowork and the separately-branded design tool, giving users access to visual work features, document creation, and advanced task automation from any conversation. Tasks can continue processing even after a user closes their laptop, with Claude checking in by default before taking actions, though users retain control to adjust these settings. The rollout begins with Pro and Max plan subscribers over the coming weeks via web, desktop, and mobile apps, with Team and Free tiers to follow. Enterprise customers will receive at least 30 days' advance notice before changes affect their organizations.

Early testimonials suggest the merged system can handle complex workflows, such as accessing legal research databases, downloading and organizing cases, and creating folders for review. The update represents a shift toward more autonomous AI assistance that manages context, skills, and connectors across previously siloed environments. All artifacts created with Claude Design, Slides, or Docs are now stored under shareable links accessible across devices, addressing cross-platform continuity issues users had reported.
