Wine 11.14 adds new WoW64 mode on FreeBSD, 7.1 DirectSound conversion and Start menu icons

Wine 11.14 is now available, providing updated compatibility for running Windows applications and games on Linux, macOS, and BSD systems. The new release introduces support for 7.1 format conversions in DirectSound, allowing applications to utilize advanced multi-channel audio configurations. In addition, version 11.14 expands cryptographic capabilities by incorporating the AES-GMAC algorithm within the BCrypt library, supporting more secure applications and protocols.

While Linux and macOS users gain expanded Windows software compatibility, FreeBSD users can now leverage a new WoW64 mode. This addition allows a broader range of 32-bit Windows applications to run on 64-bit FreeBSD systems, improving flexibility for users on this platform. Alongside these core changes, Wine has also implemented support for displaying icons in the Start menu interface, enhancing visual parity with the original Windows environment.

These updates are rounded out with 21 targeted bug fixes, improving reliability across a range of popular titles and productivity software. Resolved issues impact applications and games such as Adobe Reader, Heroes of the Storm, Falcon BMS, Age of Empires I & II, and Microsoft Office Word 2016, among others. This collection of fixes and new features is intended to provide a smoother user experience for running Windows software on non-Windows platforms.
