Wine 11.19 brings vertical text support in GDIPlus, Unicode 18.0 & caching for DNS queries
The Wine development team has announced the release of Wine version 11.19, bringing several technical enhancements and stability improvements to the Windows compatibility layer for Unix-like operating systems. This latest development update introduces support for vertical text rendering in GDIPlus, an important addition for applications requiring Asian language layouts. The release also includes a significant Unicode character table upgrade to version 18.0, caching mechanisms for DNS queries that should improve network performance, and refinements to the VBScript parser. These changes reflect Wine's ongoing effort to broaden its application compatibility across diverse software ecosystems.
Among the most notable corrections in this release are 23 bug fixes addressing issues ranging from gaming to enterprise software. Several high-profile applications received attention, including ArcGIS Pro which was crashing on startup, and Euro Truck Simulator 2 which failed to launch with OpenGL rendering under certain conditions. Gaming enthusiasts may find particular relief in fixes for Zombie Army 4's memory leak, Desperados 2's animated shadow crashes on NVIDIA hardware, and Final Fantasy XI's cursor activation problems. Developer tools also saw improvements, with resolution of a .NET Framework 4.8 rounding issue and msvc-wine build deadlocks. Security-related fixes include addressing an uninitialized hash vulnerability in the rsaenh module that could affect Steam games and other encrypted applications.
The source code for Wine 11.19 is now available from the official WineHQ download repository, with binary packages expected to roll out across various Linux distributions through their standard package channels.
