Sony says existing PlayStation disc games can still get reprints after 2028
As previously reported, Sony plans to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, with new releases moving to digital formats after that cutoff. New reports now indicate that PlayStation will continue supporting existing physical games after 2028, although that support appears to be limited to reprints of titles released before the deadline.
According to Game File, Sony sent a message to publishing partners confirming that they will still be able to place reorders for existing PlayStation disc games. This means games released before January 2028 could still receive new disc print runs after Sony stops producing discs for new titles, depending on publisher demand and retail availability. However, Sony also said the ordering process for discs will change, with more details to be announced later.
The update does not reverse Sony’s broader move away from physical media for future PlayStation releases. For games released after January 2028, publishers will reportedly be able to sell retail versions using digital codes, though it is still unclear whether that means codes codes in boxes, as has already been confirmed for Grand Theft Auto 6, cards, or another format. The move is still drawing controversy, especially as it revives concerns around real ownership and long term access to digital only content. It also does not help that Sony recently announced it will remove more than 500 movies from users’ libraries due to expiring licensing agreements, regardless of whether they had already been bought, raising the obvious concern that nothing guarantees the same could not happen to games in the future.
