Meta launches Muse Image AI model for advanced generation across Instagram and WhatsApp
Meta has introduced Muse Image, the first image generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, its team focused on advanced AI systems, expanding the newer Muse model family that is gradually replacing the company’s previous Llama-based generation tools. Available through the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories, and WhatsApp, the model improves prompt understanding, visual reference handling, and multi-photo blending. It can also reason through requests before generating an image, helping it plan layouts and use real-time web context when needed.
Users can create images from scratch, edit photos, remove objects, generate infographics, and add legible text inside visuals. Muse Image can also handle more complex requests, such as placing someone in front of a landmark or generating working QR codes. Meta AI is adding a presets panel for common image tasks, while Instagram Stories now includes over 30 AI-powered effects and WhatsApp users in select countries can generate images directly in chats.
Perhaps the most controversial feature is that users can also @mention Instagram accounts to incorporate public profile photos into new creations, a capability that has raised privacy concerns because it lets people manipulate images from other public Instagram profiles simply by tagging them, although Meta does provide an opt out setting for users who do not want their content used this way. The company says Muse Image is free for everyday use, though heavier usage will require a subscription once limits are reached.
