Android rolls out fake call detection in Phone app to fight AI deepfake scam calls

Android is deploying fake call detection in the Phone by Google app to address the increasing risk of impersonation scams. This automatic feature works to detect and flag suspected spoofed calls, offering an added defense when traditional caller ID is no longer sufficient due to new scam tactics. With scammers now spoofing contact numbers and using artificial intelligence to clone voices, Android’s system verifies callers in real time.

Once a contact calls and both parties use Phone by Google, a silent confirmation signal is exchanged between devices. This digital handshake, built on end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) technology, ensures privacy for users. When this confirmation is absent, the receiving device pings the contact's actual device to check if a legitimate call is taking place. If the real device confirms no call is being made, the user receives a clear warning to hang up immediately.

Following these core security measures, the feature is enabled by default and requires no manual setup from users. Google is rolling out this protection worldwide for Android 12 and newer devices, beginning with Pixel phones. As it uses open-standard RCS technology, other apps and device manufacturers can integrate similar protections in the future.
