Google is shrinking free storage from 15GB to 5GB unless you add a verified phone number
Google has reportedly introduced a new policy for free storage on newly created accounts. Some users have reported that newly created accounts now start with only 5GB, instead of the 15GB that was previously available by default, unless they link a phone number during setup.
In the setup notice, Google presents the phone number step as a way to increase the account’s free storage limit to 15GB. Users who skip that step keep the default 5GB, and Google says the phone number helps ensure the extra storage is added only once per person. The change effectively creates two free storage tiers for new accounts: 5GB without verification and 15GB with verification.
Google’s support documentation also now says accounts include “up to 15GB of cloud storage at no charge,” instead of promising 15GB by default. The storage still applies across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos, while existing accounts have not been reported as affected.

you have to understand, such volunteer-run non-profit free indie project as Gooble just can't handle so many users and storage at once... (sarcasm)
Google really makes it easy to switch to alternatives like kdrive wich is free for 15 gigs and also - swiss based, privacy focused and and and, this might be just the last drop needed for a data migration ?
Google has been forcing phone numbers for account creation for maybe 8-9 years now so what's the point of this? This restrictions is 100% greed to make you pay for more or tie your personal number to your account. The workaround to create an account without a number on a phone doesn't really work, because it only works twice and the account is anyways tied to the phone.
I mean its a business. They dont have to give any space to users who arent paying a penny
If it were just a straight trade, space for a phone number, it would be understandable. But Google also gets tracking data on everything that is stored. It can be used to train AI and display ads in the app.
@xdillfrescott The problem is that they did and now they are retracting. It's just another ploy to coerce the userbase that they grew with generous offers and now must choose between three bad options. It's an unfortunately common businesses practice but that doesn't make it any more morale or acceptable.
and they should give that 10GB to the phone verified users as well
Little Red Riding Hood: Why do you want my phone number grandma? The wolf: To spy you better dear.
