OpenAI introduces workspace agents in ChatGPT to automate team tasks across business apps
OpenAI has introduced Workspace Agents in ChatGPT, a new feature that lets teams create AI assistants or bots that can keep working on tasks on their own. Unlike custom GPTs, these agents can connect to external apps, remember context across projects, and handle multi-step workflows without needing repeated prompts.
Powered by OpenAI’s Codex model, workspace agents run in the cloud, allowing them to keep working even when users are not logged in. Users can create an agent by describing a workflow, while ChatGPT helps map the process, connect tools, test it, and prepare it for deployment. Once active, agents can run on schedules, respond to triggers, and be shared across an organization for use in ChatGPT or Slack.
Examples include agents that gather product feedback online and report it to Slack, or draft sales follow-ups in Gmail. OpenAI says GPTs will remain available while teams test workspace agents, and that it will make it easier to convert existing GPTs into workspace agents later. Workspace agents are currenty available in research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers users, and will remain free until May 6, 2026, before moving to a credit-based pricing model.
