LineageOS 24 brings Android 17, new WebUSB flash tools, updated apps, and security patches
LineageOS has officially unveiled version 24.0, built on Android 17, the latest iteration from Google, just three months before the project celebrates its tenth anniversary on December 24, 2026. Lead developer Nolen Johnson announced the release, noting the team's surprise at completing the Android 17 rebase ahead of schedule. Despite Android 17's June release containing primarily iterative improvements and UI refinements, LineageOS developers leveraged their experience with Google's recent codebase refactoring to deliver the new version sooner than expected.
The most significant addition for end users comes in the form of new browser-based WebUSB flashing tools available at flash.lineageos.org. These tools support ADB, Fastboot, Amlogic Burn protocol, and Samsung Odin protocol, allowing users to install LineageOS directly from a compatible web browser without downloading separate desktop utilities. While the traditional installation guides via the LineageOS Wiki remain the primary supported method, the WebUSB option streamlines the process for users comfortable with device-specific instructions who prefer avoiding additional software.
Beyond installation improvements, LineageOS 24 brings substantial application updates across its core app suite, with many now featuring Material Design 3 Expressive styling. Highlights include Canvas, a brand-new image editor for cropping, white balance, and filter adjustments; an updated Updater app with streaming downloads for faster installations on A/B devices; and Twelve music player improvements including better Jellyfin support and fixed audio track offloading issues. Security patches spanning August 2025 through October 2026 have been merged across all active branches (18.1 through 24.0), while legacy branches 15.1, 16.0, and 17.1 will continue receiving patches.
The project also announced formal kernel policy changes for LineageOS 24.0: devices running Linux Kernel versions 4.4 and 4.9 will only be accepted for LineageOS 22.2 submissions going forward, as the older kernels require extensive hacky commits that complicate forward-porting to newer Android versions. Meanwhile, LineageOS 23.2 and 24.0 now exclusively ship kernels with 1:1 eBPF backports and GCC-free build capabilities. In parallel, the project completed a comprehensive accessibility audit conducted free-of-charge by the a11y project, which already led to recovery navigation and UI revisions alongside training sessions for over 40 contributors.
