Joomla 6.2 brings TinyMCE editor updates, OAuth2 support, and security flag for extensions

The Joomla Project has announced the official release of Joomla 6.2, code-named “Mwezi”, marking a significant minor version update focused on streamlining content creation and bolstering platform security. The update introduces substantial improvements to the TinyMCE editor, including seamless integration with Joomla's media manager for easier media insertion, a unified link-selector modal for articles and contacts, and a dedicated “Read More” button for quicker article break management. These enhancements aim to reduce friction for content editors while ensuring the text filter configuration aligns more closely with Joomla's native settings rather than relying on TinyMCE's defaults.

Beyond the editing experience, Joomla 6.2 expands flexibility for site administrators and developers through enhanced category and module features. Articles and categories now support separate CSS class fields for images and figure elements, granting finer styling control, while subcategory images can be displayed in category lists across content, contacts, and newsfeeds. New login module configuration options allow admins to hide password recovery links without template overrides, and submenu toggling issues in nested menu levels have been resolved for smoother navigation.

Security and developer experience also receive notable attention in this release. A generic XOAuth2 support system enables authentication via mail providers like Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, replacing stored SMTP passwords with refresh tokens for improved security posture. The installation process features refined error handling, and developers can now flag extension releases by severity level, highlighting critical security updates on the dashboard. Additionally, the JavaScript and CSS asset pipeline has been substantially reorganized with new builders and watch commands, primarily benefiting core and extension developers working within the Joomla ecosystem.
