DietPi 10.8 delivers network overhaul with new tool to manage WireGuard servers & clients

DietPi has released version 10.8, marking one of the most significant updates to the lightweight ARM-focused operating system in recent months. This update introduces the headline feature: dietpi-wireguard, a dedicated tool for managing WireGuard virtual private network servers and clients directly from the DietPi menu interface. This new utility allows users to create and configure servers and clients, display client configurations as QR codes for easy mobile device setup, and manage IPv6 support with NAT66 subnetting, a capability that was previously missing from the standard WireGuard setup.

Beyond the WireGuard enhancements, version 10.8 brings substantial usability improvements to the core DietPi experience. Most notably, the project has transitioned software package identifiers from numeric values to human-readable names throughout the system. Users will now reference software like Node-RED using nodered instead of the former numeric ID 122, simplifying command-line operations and configuration file editing. While the old numeric IDs remain supported for backward compatibility, this change reflects a growing maturity in the platform's design philosophy. Additional infrastructure work includes DietPi's introduction of a custom HAProxy APT package and extensive input validation across network configuration tools, preventing invalid IP addresses, CIDR notation errors, and malformed Wi-Fi hotspot settings from being written to the system.

The release also addresses several community-reported issues in Drive Manager, particularly around HFS+ formatting on Debian Trixie and later versions, and proper handling of NFS share paths containing spaces. These refinements demonstrate DietPi's continued commitment to maintaining compatibility with evolving Linux distributions while expanding its functionality for home lab enthusiasts and embedded systems users. Version 10.8 is available now for all supported hardware platforms through the standard update mechanism.
