Files v4.0 is out now with a new Omnibar, Dual Pane mode, expanded cloud support, and more

The next major version of the popular the open-source Windows file manager alternative, Files v.4.0, has been finally released, delivering a lot of UI updates and several new features like a Dual Pane mode, an updated Fluent design app icon, and the redesigned Omnibar. This Omnibar replaces the traditional path bar and search box with a single unified control, letting users switch between navigation and search through buttons or shortcuts, while the integrated Command Palette from Microsoft PowerToys provides quick access to a wide range of advanced actions.

Dual Pane mode enables efficient management of two folders side by side, improving drag-and-drop file transfers and navigation across folders, with mirrored paths created automatically when a new pane opens. Search and Filter are now separate: Search uses the Windows index for system-wide results, while Filter provides live, folder-specific queries.

Cloud support expands with MagentaCLOUD, Sync, and OX Drive, while Microsoft OneDrive storage details are now displayed in Properties on Windows 11. Developer tools add custom IDE mappings and GitHub repository cloning directly from dropped URLs, with progress tracked in the Status Center. Other improvements include Compare Hashes and Signatures tabs for file integrity, smarter Columns View, updated archive handling, more customization options, and broader localization. For the full list of changes and details, you can check the official changelog here.
