Threads finally gets standalone DMs and launches visual highlighter
Meta has unveiled two key updates for Threads, its microblogging social platform. First, users can now send direct messages within the app, addressing a top community request and enabling private, ongoing conversations. While messaging is enabled, it comes with some restrictions: DMs are available only between users who both follow each other on Threads or are mutual Instagram followers, and both participants must be at least 18 years old.
Building on this feature, Meta announced that additional improvements are already in development, including new message controls, group messaging, and inbox filters to offer more ways for users to manage their conversations in future updates.
Alongside messaging, Threads has introduced a highlighter, a dedicated visual element designed to spotlight unique perspectives and stimulate thoughtful discussions. Initially, the highlighter appears in discovery sections of the app and alongside trending topics, highlighting compelling conversations as users browse content. Meta has stated that the highlighter will be extended to more locations within the app soon.
