Google launches Search Live for AI-based real-time voice conversations in mobile Search
Google has begun testing a new feature called Search Live within AI Mode, enabling real-time voice conversations with its AI chatbot directly from the Google Search engine. Available to US-based users through Google Labs on Android and iOS, the feature uses a custom version of Google Gemini to deliver spoken responses based on live web results.
Users interact by tapping the new Live icon in the Google app and asking questions out loud, with the system supporting follow-up queries within the same session for a more natural conversation flow. A transcript button lets users view responses and reply by typing if preferred, while conversations are saved in AI Mode history and can continue in the background when switching between apps.
The experience resembles Perplexity’s voice mode, where users can speak to the assistant and receive search results read aloud based on their query. While interactions are currently limited to voice only, Google plans to add camera support soon, enabling users to ask about what they see in real time using visual input alongside voice.
