Skype is officially shutting down for good today, as Microsoft transitions users to Teams
Skype, the once-popular video call platform, is officially being discontinued as of today, marking the end of an era in online communication. Microsoft confirmed the shutdown two months ago and now asks existing Skype users to move to Microsoft Teams instead. If users sign in to Teams with their Skype credentials, their contacts and chat history will be automatically transferred, streamlining the switch between services. Users will also receive a notification in the Skype app to guide them through the migration process.
For those not interested in adopting Microsoft Teams, there is the option to export Skype data, allowing users to retain their chat history and other information before the service is fully inaccessible. Skype's retirement comes after years of declining popularity as alternatives like Zoom, Discord, Signal, Element, Jami, Jitsi Meet, and more, gained traction with modern features and updated interfaces.

And "Skype for Business" (yes, this has existed) is programmed for next October. So the 18y old Skype will join Microsoft cemetery next to "MSN Chat", "Windows Messenger", "Windows Live", "MSN Messenger" and other services that everybody hated but was using. I'd like to say it's cheaper for Microsoft to just kill a brand instead of improving it, but will never know what could be have been done if Microsoft has really tried.
