Codeium rebrands to Windsurf Plugins as company focuses on its flagship AI editor

The AI coding assistant formerly known as Codeium has been officially rebranded as Windsurf Plugins, aligning with the company's transformation to the new name, Windsurf. Initially launched in 2022, Codeium is a GitHub Copilot-style assistant that offers AI code completion and suggestions through extensions for popular third-party editors like Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Vim, Neovim, and others.

In November 2024, the company introduced Windsurf Editor, a standalone AI-powered IDE, marking a strategic shift in its product lineup. Described as the first "agentic IDE," this new editor has become one of the most popular alternatives to other "Vibe Coding" tools like Cursor, integrating AI more deeply into the development workflow and now serving as the company's flagship product. The success of Windsurf Editor has shifted public perception and prompted the rebranding, as users increasingly associate the company with the Windsurf brand.

It's worth mentioning that Windsurf Plugins and Windsurf Editor are distinct products, with the former as an extension for existing IDEs and the latter a full IDE, although future development will focus mostly enhancing the Editor, while still expanding plugin capabilities and growing the broader AI-driven Windsurf ecosystem.
