Discord launches Social SDK to integrate social features into games
Discord has launched a Social SDK designed to integrate the platform's social features into games, allowing for friend lists, cross-platform messaging, and voice chat without needing a Discord account. This move is designed to enhance player engagement and retention by making social interactions more seamless within Discord's extensive ecosystem, with over 200 million monthly active users.
The SDK is compatible with C++, Unreal Engine, and Unity, supporting Windows 11 and macOS, with plans to expand to consoles and mobile devices. Key features include a Unified Friends List, Game Invites for direct session joining, and an Enhanced Presence feature to display gaming activity on Discord.
Currently in closed beta, Discord is testing cross-platform messaging across PC, consoles, and mobile, along with in-game chat integration with Discord servers and voice chat powered by Discord’s voice tools. Meanwhile, several game studios, including Theorycraft Games, Facepunch Studios, and Tencent Games, are already implementing the SDK.
