Google relaunches Cameyo virtualization tool for streamed legacy Windows apps on ChromeOS
Google has relaunched Cameyo as Cameyo by Google after acquiring the platform in 2023. The service lets organizations run legacy Windows or Linux applications directly in Google Chrome or as web apps without virtualizing a full desktop, streaming only the specific apps they need. This allows Windows tools like Microsoft Excel and Autodesk AutoCAD to run alongside Chrome and other web apps in the same workflow.
Cameyo by Google is aimed at Windows-based organizations that want to transition to ChromeOS without losing access to essential Windows software. The approach reduces dependence on Microsoft’s operating system and supports broader adoption of Chromebooks and ChromeOS in enterprise settings.
The platform integrates with Chrome Enterprise and will also bring Google Gemini AI features to legacy apps, allowing them to summarize documents, extract information from videos, and use tab context to assist with tasks, extending these capabilities to older Windows programs that previously required running on Windows.
