Zed Editor integrates OpenAI Codex via ACP and open-sources adapter
Zed Editor now offers official integration of Zed Editor using the Agent Client Protocol (ACP). Users can launch Codex directly from the New Thread menu, joining other ACP-supported agents such as Claude Code and Gemini CLI. The addition follows strong community demand after earlier ACP adoptions by Anthropic, Google, and JetBrains.
All Codex interactions stay private, with prompts and code sent directly between users and OpenAI. Zed does not process, store, or bill for external agent usage.
Zed also open-sourced the Codex-ACP adapter so developers can use it outside the editor. Unlike previous agents, Codex runs terminal commands in its own process and streams results to the client in non-PTY mode, reducing potential freezes but offering less interactivity. The team is evaluating both PTY and non-PTY modes to guide future ACP improvements.
