Meta sunsetting Facebook Messenger desktop apps for macOS and Windows
Meta is discontinuing its https://alternativeto.net/software/facebook-messenger/about/ apps for Windows and macOS, shifting desktop access entirely to the web. The company has not announced a replacement, but it’s safe to assume the service will be accessible only through the web from now on.
According to Meta’s support page, macOS users will have 60 days to continue using the app after receiving an in-app notification. Once that period ends, access will be blocked, and Meta recommends deleting the app. The Mac version has already been removed from the App Store, while the Windows version remains on the Microsoft Store for now, with no clear timeline for its removal.
The standalone Facebook app on Windows continues to function only as a web wrapper instead of a full desktop client, and if you’re looking for other third-party alternatives to keep using Messenger on desktop, you might want to check out some all-in-one messaging hubs like Franz, Ferdium, or the recently relaunched Beeper.
